About the Signdance Collective

Founded in 2001 by David Bower and Isolte Avila, Signdance Collective develops original performances using signdance, the unique visual language they created twenty one years ago.

In consistently innovative ways,  SDC accesses both deaf and hearing audiences to ground breaking new dance theatre performances, through a blend of signdance, signdance improvisation / sculpt, , film, live music interpretation and new  music composition .

SDC is committed to artistic collaboration, research and education with an inclusive collective of physically disabled, D/deaf, and non-disabled artists, all of whom are highly respected in their own fields.

Signdance Collective work in-collaboration with  composers, and musicians , as part of the company's commitment to live and  visible music for all our audiences.

SDC  is led by Deaf and Physically disabled artist/directors , working within  a unique performance language which the company pioneered ,and  in which sign-language is at the centre of artistic creation.

d/ Deaf and physically disabled performers and creators working together  is crucial to SDC's work .Signlanguage and Signdance  is the tool that builds bridges between the two groups , and between these two groups and non-disabled contributors.
